Amgen Culture

One word that would describe Amgen's culture is...

Supportive.

Being inclusive.

Comradery.

Trusting.

Welcoming.

Be inclusive.

Amgen has a really diverse culture. It's extremely supportive and really collaborative.

The friendly approach that people have with one another in the different departments and how well they work with one another. It makes it an easy way to get your work done.

And it's very warm and welcoming and everyone feels included.

It's inclusive, it's engaging. I really think that people are given the opportunity to be the very best version of themselves. They get an opportunity to come to work and really be empowered to deliver on the purpose, deliver on the task, deliver on the role. Have fun hopefully, enjoy it, smile, but get to make a real difference.

The best thing about working at Amgen for me is the diversity of work that I get to work on in my current position.

Working at Amgen, you work with different people, different departments, who have an amazing portfolio and pipeline.

I get to try new things every day. My role allows me to explore different aspects of what Amgen does, get involved in lots of different projects. I've never been bored a day in my career.

There's lots of flexibility, great people, loads of opportunities, and we're serving patients. So it's fantastic.

Whether it's with a colleague who's got a development plan, whether it's with the medicines, the brands, whether it's an opportunity in the external landscape, every single interaction is an opportunity just to make a real difference. So at Amgen, we really trust our people to do the work they've got to do. So we really hope that that ensures that they can find a really nice balance from a work perspective as well as from a personal point of view.

Mental Health

In the UK, Amgen has received a gold award for two consecutive years from MIND, a nonprofit focused on mental health. In addition to raising awareness of mental health and providing support, Amgen UK also has a community of certified mental health first-aiders to support employees and connect them to local resources.

Employee Resource Groups

Our strategy is intended to help Amgen successfully navigate a complex global marketplace as we bring more medicines to more patients around the world. Amgen is setting goals to improve our focus. These goals will also serve as a baseline for measuring our progress toward a more inclusive workplace.

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are a tool we use to promote and support, as well as illustrate, the impact and value that diversity has on our business. There are currently 12 Global ERGs at Amgen, all with executive sponsorship, that are organised around a primary diversity dimension. We provide leaders and managers with training and tools to lead a diverse workforce and create an inclusive environment.

Balance the SySTEM

There is a huge gap between the number of people with STEM skills and the number of roles across the sector that need to be filled. As the STEM sector expands, this gap will widen further. For the UK to maintain global competitiveness, it is imperative for businesses and government to work together to address the skills shortfall.

Very few of those currently working in STEM occupations in the UK are women. Tapping into the pool of female talent will be key to helping ensure the future success of this sector. And research shows that businesses perform better with a more diverse workforce and more women in senior management.

In 2018, we collaborated with other biotech and pharmaceutical companies to deliver ‘Balance the SySTEM’, working in partnership with the UK Government Equalities Office (GEO) and UK Women’s Business Council (WBC) to provide support, guidance, and practical tools to help small-medium enterprises (SMEs) in STEM offer a more gender-balanced work environment.

We prioritised this work to reinforce the value of sharing best practice in championing diversity and inclusion in STEM, and saw value in providing practical and implementable tools, validated in the large company setting, to smaller organisations wishing to make positive changes to improve diversity. Community Initiatives

We support our staff to give back to the communities in which we operate through an Amgen Impact Day, where staff can volunteer at a charity or community group of their choice. This gives staff the opportunity to improve the lives of others, their communities, and to help tackle social challenges.

Some of the organisations supported by our staff include the Cambridge Science Centre, Barretstown, the Edmund Trust, Middlesbrough Environment City, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), the Peter McVerry Trust Detox Centre, Slough Homeless Our Concern (SHOC), Shooting Stars, and Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust. A number of our staff have also participated in the annual Myeloma UK London to Paris Bike Ride.
